Overview

What Quidco is

Most online purchases already contain a hidden payment. The retailer has agreed to pay a commission to whoever delivered the customer, and that payment usually disappears into an advertising network. Quidco is the UK cashback site built on one idea: make the shopper the recipient of that commission instead. Quidco is free to join through its website or its mobile apps, and members earn a percentage of their spending back at participating retailers.

The Quidco homepage describes the service plainly: cashback on the UK's top brands. That summary is accurate. Quidco lists more than 5,000 retailers, from supermarkets and takeaway apps to insurers and phone networks, and it pays members a share of what those retailers pay it for the referral.

Why Quidco cashback exists at all

The mechanism is worth understanding, because it explains why the money is real rather than a marketing allowance. When a member clicks from Quidco to a retailer and buys something, the retailer pays Quidco a commission for the sale. Quidco then passes most of that commission back to the member as cashback.

Nobody at Quidco is giving money away. The retailer is spending marketing budget it had already set aside, and the member is collecting a cut of it. Quidco keeps the remainder, which is how a free Quidco membership can stay free. This also explains why Quidco cashback arrives weeks after a purchase: the money only reaches your Quidco account after the retailer confirms the sale and pays Quidco first.

The scale of the Quidco retailer list

The 5,000+ retailer figure matters more than it might seem. A cashback site is only as useful as the chance that the shop you were about to use anyway is on the list. Quidco covers the categories where UK households actually spend.

Food and drink includes Tesco, Deliveroo, Domino's and Just Eat. Clothing covers ASOS, Nike and H&M. Electricals range from Currys and Argos to Samsung. Insurance listings include Aviva, Admiral and LV=. Utilities and telecoms feature Sky, BT and Vodafone. Travel lists Trainline, Expedia and Travelodge, while home shopping includes John Lewis and Dunelm, and health and beauty includes Boots and Sephora.

In practice this means the decision is rarely whether a purchase qualifies, but whether you remembered to start it at Quidco. The breadth of the list is the real product.

How a member uses Quidco day to day

The working routine is short. Before buying something, search for the retailer, read the rate and the conditions on its Quidco page, then click through to the shop and complete the purchase as normal. Quidco tracks the purchase to your account, and once the retailer confirms it, the cashback moves from tracked to payable.

Quidco also offers a browser extension and mobile apps, which reduce the routine to a single reminder: the extension notices when you land on a participating retailer and prompts you to activate cashback. For people who forget to start at Quidco, the extension is the feature that turns an occasional trick into a consistent habit.

When the balance is payable, members withdraw to PayPal or a bank account, or take gift cards, some of which come with bonus value on top of the cashback amount. The whole cycle, from the first Quidco click to money in the bank, runs on one page inside the Quidco account, which lists every purchase with its current status and the date the retailer is expected to confirm. Nothing about the cycle requires effort beyond that first click.

One more note on credibility: Quidco is not an obscure startup. The UK national press has covered it repeatedly, with the site citing mentions in The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Times, the BBC and Metro, and reported figures put total member payouts above £1.7 billion over its lifetime.

Beyond ordinary online shopping

Quidco is not limited to click-through purchases. The same Quidco account handles several other earning routes, and a complete profile should mention them.

Gift cards pay cashback at rates that reach up to 18%, which suits planned spending at shops you already visit. In-store cashback, through a linked payment card, reaches up to 6.8% at participating shops, so the high street is covered too. Quidco Compare adds insurance, broadband and mobile deals, where a single switch can earn more cashback than a year of grocery clicks.

Each route has its own rates and rules, and Quidco states them on the relevant retailer pages before you commit.

Free to join, with one optional Quidco upgrade

Basic membership costs nothing. There is no joining fee and no subscription deducted from your card. Quidco also runs a Premium tier, which costs £1 a month and is taken from your cashback balance, and only in months where you actually shop. Quidco Premium offers up to 25% higher cashback rates at selected retailers, plus a £25 reward for referring a friend.

The pricing structure is honest in a way worth pointing out: if you do not shop in a given month, you pay nothing that month even on Premium. A member who uses the service lightly stays on Basic for free forever, and a heavier earner can judge the £1 against the uplift.

Who Quidco suits

Quidco suits anyone in the UK who shops online with any regularity and is willing to add one step before checkout. It works best for people whose spending concentrates in the listed categories: groceries and takeaways, clothing, electronics, insurance renewals, broadband switches and travel. The service rewards organised shoppers more than impulse shoppers, because the money only arrives when the purchase starts inside Quidco.

It is less useful for someone who buys mainly from small independent shops outside the Quidco list, or who cannot tolerate waiting for confirmation before the cashback becomes payable. The delay is not a defect; it is how the commission chain settles.

For everyone else, Quidco turns money that was already being spent on referrals into money returned to the person who earned it. Founded in 2005 and now part of MONY Group, Quidco has been doing exactly this for two decades, and the homepage promise is a modest one the mechanism can keep: more value from the shopping you were doing anyway.
