Writing Scenarios

Strange situations with the pressure built in.

  • The city's fire alarms all went off at once, three days ago, and have not gone off since. Nothing burned. Everyone is being very calm about it, which is starting to be the frightening part. Pressure: your protagonist is the only person who filed a report — and the report has been answered, in handwriting, by someone who signed it "the alarms".

    Scenario · quiet apocalypse

  • A generation ship's children have started speaking a language the adults cannot parse. The ship's linguist has concluded, carefully, in a report nobody read twice: it is not a new language. It is the destination's. Pressure: your protagonist's daughter is fluent, and the ship is still forty years out.

    Scenario · generation ship

  • Every mirror in the palace now shows the room as it will be in four minutes. The king's advisors have stopped looking at them. The king has not. Pressure: your protagonist is the mirror-cleaner, the only person who must look, and in four minutes the throne is empty.

    Scenario · court intrigue

What Makes a Scenario Work

1

One impossible rule

A scenario is a normal world plus one broken rule — mirrors four minutes early, memories as currency. The rule does the genre; everything else stays mundane.

2

Pressure before plot

Situations without deadlines stay situations. "Pressure:" is the line that turns an interesting idea into something a protagonist must survive this week.

3

Small scale, sharp edges

One house, one bakery, one office. Scenarios outperform epics because every detail can stay specific — and specificity is what readers feel.

4

Give it a witness

The best scenarios include a role to play: the scribe, the cleaner, the grocery delivery. The reader enters the scene through that door.

5

Brief the AI on a theme

Type "art heist" or "family reunion" and get four scenarios around it — each with its own inverted rule and a pressure line to steal.

Questions

Scenario Generator FAQ

How does the scenario generator work?

Describe a theme — or skip it — and the AI writes several complete scenarios: a strange-but-specific situation, one impossible rule, and a "Pressure:" line that forces action.

Scenarios vs. plot ideas?

Plots are arcs with endings; scenarios are situations with pressure. Scenarios are for tabletop one-shots, writing exercises, and stories where you want to discover the ending.

Can I use these for D&D or roleplay?

Yes — one scenario plus a party is a session. The "Pressure:" line is effectively your session timer.

What genres does it cover?

The filter spans Modern, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Horror, and Slice of Life; AI mode follows whatever theme you describe, including hybrids.
