Character Backstories

Wound, formative years, and the secret underneath.

  • The eldest of five in a fishing town that stopped trusting the sea. Their father's boat came back without their father, and their mother responded by never again cooking fish in a house full of fishermen. They left at seventeen with a scholarship they never mentioned and a habit of counting exits that never quite faded. Now they return every winter, ostensibly for the holidays, actually to stand at the harbor and lose the same argument with the water.

  • A colony kid who grew up listening to Earth's radio shows twenty minutes late — the delay of light. They learned to predict the punchlines before the signals arrived, which their teachers called gifted and their friends called insufferable. When the colony failed, it was their re-rigged antenna that reached the rescue beacon. They do not talk about the nineteen days in between, but they have never once been late to anything since.

  • A battlefield medic who learned medicine backwards — from wounds in, rather than anatomy out. They can name a projectile by the shape it leaves and a retreat by the order in which the wounded arrive. The war ended the way wars do: ambiguously, and mostly elsewhere. They now run a clinic that treats whoever walks in, and the only rule on the wall is that nobody asks anybody which side they were on.

How to Write a Backstory That Matters

1

Start from the wound

A backstory is an injury plus its scar tissue. "Boat came back without their father" earns the exit-counting habit; a list of hometown facts earns nothing.

2

Give it one secret

The best backstories contain something the character has never said aloud — it sits under every scene like a stone in a shoe, generating behavior.

3

End at the present tense

Bring the past right up to the story's first page and stop. The gap between where the backstory ends and the plot begins is where character lives.

4

Specifics beat statistics

Not "grew up poor" but "learned which neighbors' lights stay on late". One drawable detail outperforms a paragraph of demographics.

5

Brief the AI and edit

Give it a character seed — even a phrase — and harvest four drafts. Keep the best wound, sharpen the habit, and make the secret yours.

Questions

Backstory Generator FAQ

How does the backstory generator work?

Describe your character — even briefly — and AI writes several complete backstories: formative wound, coping habit, and a secret, in two or three tight paragraphs. Without a description, curated examples render instead.

What makes these backstories different?

They are built on the wound-habit-secret structure instead of chronology. Each one implies behavior on the page, which is the only job a backstory has.

Can I use them for D&D characters?

Yes — though for race-and-class-flavored hooks, the D&D backstory generator next door is tuned for tabletop specifically.

Are these backstories free to use?

Yes, treat them as drafts to edit. The best results come from keeping the wound and rewriting the details to fit your world.
