Study for geography and capital quizzes
Each card shows the capital and abbreviation, so drawing states is a ready-made flashcard drill for U.S. geography class.
Set a story or video game location
Writers roll a state when a story needs a fresh setting. The region filter keeps the pick plausible for your characters' road trip or small-town mystery.
Pick fairly between options
Can't decide where to eat, move, or meet up? Assign each option a state, draw one, and let the pool decide — no arguments.
Play "50 states" trivia
Draw a state, then race to name its capital, nickname, or a famous landmark. The generator keeps score straight and the game moving.
Random State Generator FAQ
How many states are in the generator?
All 50 U.S. states plus Washington D.C. — 51 entries total. Pick a region filter to draw only from the Northeast, Midwest, South, or West.
Does it include U.S. territories?
No — Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands are territories, not states, so they are not in the pool.
Why does the generator group states into regions?
The four regions follow the U.S. Census Bureau's standard grouping, the same split used by most statistics and textbooks. It makes it easy to draw, say, only warm-weather southern states or New England road trip candidates.
Can I draw multiple states at once?
Yes — each click draws six states. Click "Another State" for a fresh batch, and enable a region filter to draw them from one part of the country only.
Is this random enough for a giveaway or contest?
It uses a pseudo-random shuffle in your browser, which is fair for casual picks and classroom use. For legally binding contests you may want a tool with auditable randomness.
